I’m all for smoky eyes. I frequently do it myself when I’m going out and it can look really great, really sexy. And if it’s not done right, it can look like someone punched you in both eyes before stealing your purse and running down the street. Unfortunately, Sarah Michelle Gellar, beautiful as she may be, got a little heavy-handed with the makeup and ended up leaning a little towards the black eyes look.

I know that Sharon Stone was probably going for the dramatic, smoky eye makeup effect here at Sundance. It’s hard. I know, I had to get someone at the MAC counter to teach me how to do it so that I didn’t look like I had gotten punched in the eye. Maybe I can give the phone number of my local MAC girl to Sharon too? Because whatever she was trying to do didn’t work unless she really wanted to nail that, “No, I SWEAR, I walked into a door handle” look.

Also, apparently no one told her to avoid using your kitchen scissors to cut your hair.

I love makeup, but it should really be subtle and highlight your own actual features.

That’s why one of my big pet peeves is seeing someone as naturally pretty as Natalie Portman with so much makeup that it looks like someone slapped it on like spackle. She doesn’t need that much! Her eyelashes are stuck together, that’s never a good sign. It’s just distracting, I can’t see her at all - just all the goop on her face.

I understand that performers have to wear a lot of makeup on-stage because of the lights. When I did ballet, our makeup was hideous up close but looked great on film. But if you’re just strolling around outside on Sunset Blvd.?

Well, I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to see someone’s makeup from eight blocks away. Christina Aguilera is looking fantastic these days but the makeup is scaring me! I hope that I’m mistaken and that she actually was about to go perform somewhere, because otherwise that’s way too much!

Drew goes 80s

Is it some new thing with the universe that all my favorite normally-cute-and-stylish celebrities have completely lost their minds?

Like, for instance, why did Drew Barrymore wake up that day and decide she was going to hit Jet Nightclub in Vegas wearing an 80s metallic dress with shiny black (patent leather maybe?) gloves and a white purse? I can’t even talk about the hair and makeup.

I’m sure that if I still had any of my magazines from the 80s, I could find a Cover Girl ad that has that exact same hair and makeup. And I don’t mean that in a good way.
